Babysitter Games For Kids

April 7th, 2010 by readorao

Babysitting is a job that requires endless energy. Either you keep the kids occupied or they keep you on your toes. Keeping them occupied is not so simple, however. Kids lose interest in a toy or an activity sooner than you think. Moreover, boredom makes kids whiny and irritable. Babysitter games come in handy here. There are plenty of such babysitter games and activities, which are interactive, educative, and fun.

If you are taking care of more than one child, the following group activities can be organized.

o Red Light, Green Light: Traffic rules can be taught early through this babysitter game. One child stands with arms outstretched and gives red and green light signals which have to be followed by the rest standing at the other end. Children are required to run on a green signal and freeze on a red signal.

o Duck Duck Goose: The kids are made to sit in a circle. One child walks around tapping each one’s head saying duck or goose. On “goose,” the child tapped (goose) must run after the tapper around the circle and reach his seat before the tapper; else, the kid will have to sit in the middle of the circle.

o Hide and Seek: One child searches the rest who hide within a defined area. The kid found first searches the rest and the game continues until all the children are found.

o Treasure Hunt: A popular babysitter game for kids above the age of three, it involves hunting for a treasure (any object) in a defined area. The child who finds it first wins. You can make it even more interesting by giving clues.

There are some babysitter games which can be played in groups or even with a single child.

o Simon Says: In this game, “Simon” gives instructions and everyone follows. Whoever fails to follows the commands is ousted and the most accurate player wins.

o Paper Bag Guess: Familiar objects in the house are collected in a bag and the children take turns feeling the object and guessing what is it.

o Silly Faces: Funny faces make kids laugh no end. Ask the kids to stand in front of the mirror and let them make scary, happy, sad, and crazy faces.

o Food Creations: Lunch time can be playtime also. Use fruits and other healthy foods to create interesting shapes and lifelike characters. You can make the kids eat by amusing them at the same time. Involving older kids can be even more enjoyable.

Hiring a babysitter often becomes essential at times, especially if you have to attend to an important task outside the house. However, many parents are not entirely comfortable with the idea of leaving their child in the hands of a complete stranger. It is important that the babysitter you hire should be capable enough of handling different possible situations in your absence.

How to Treat Baby Acne

April 6th, 2010 by readorao

Did you know that there is such a thing as baby acne? Actually it is more common than you might think. Many newborns show signs of acne within two weeks of birth. This doesn’t mean that your baby will have blemishes forever; it just needs to be recognized and treated.

Baby acne is one of the most difficult forms to understand. Many scientists still do not know the answer to why your newborn gets blemished skin. Some believe that the hormones received by the mother at birth could be the cause of baby acne. Others believe that medications that the mother is taking while breastfeeding might be the reason. Unfortunately there is no right or wrong answer as to what gives your newborn acne, but there are ways to help prevent and treat it.

There may be no clear answer as to why newborn acne develops, but there are a few ways to help relieve this problem. Be sure to use mild detergents that have been washed thoroughly. This is to prevent irritation. A baby’s skin is much more sensitive to strong detergents than ours and may cause the acne to worsen or even cause a rash. Be sure to clean any milk or food from your baby’s face gently. Just like with adults, baby acne does not get better if you try to scrub it away. A baby is easily scarred from the smaller things, and acne is no exception, so please do not try to scrub your baby’s face. These preventative methods are the best acne baby treatment.

Sometimes the best answer for how to treat baby acne is simple…have patience. Many newborns will close their pimples within two weeks, perhaps a little longer. It is vital that you keep you baby’s face clean and to not apply moisturizer or any other acne treatment medications that you have used for yourself. These types of medications are much too strong and can cause irritation to an infant’s skin.

Many people may be concerned at first sight of the rash-like appearance. You may even be tempted to take your baby to the doctor to find an acne baby treatment. The reality is that there really isn’t any medication for blemishes that is safe for using on a baby’s delicate skin.

If you have kept your child clean and laundered their clothes and blankets properly and the problem hasn’t gotten better, then it may be something else. There are many different types of skin rashes that are more predominant in babies than in adults, which means if it doesn’t look like tiny pimples, then it is best to get it checked by a doctor just to be safe.

You may be concerned about how to treat baby acne, but the only medicine is patience and cleanliness. An acne baby treatment more than likely will never be prescribed because as of today, there isn’t a market for such medications. Baby acne may be a nuisance, but it will most certainly go away within a few weeks.

Children’s Clothing For Plus-Size Kids

April 4th, 2010 by readorao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Children’s clothing items are not manufactured equally, but they are rarely made to fit plus-size children. This makes shopping for clothes for plus-size kids difficult, since many clothes are made based on the standard size of children according to age. This practice is sensible for the manufacturer, since there are more regular-sized children than plus-size ones. However, the number of overweight kids is increasing drastically. The most recent study done by Newsweek states that 14 percent of the kids in America is overweight. This means 14 percent of the kids in the country are having a hard time looking for children’s clothing that would fit them properly.

Unfortunately, plus-size kids need the right children’s clothes according to their fit in order to prevent being ostracized by their peers. Many push their kids to lose weight in order to solve this problem, but weight-loss problems do not yield instant results. Therefore, parents and plus-size children have to make do with the existing children’s clothing available. Luckily, there are ways to make typical pieces of children’s clothing to fit overweight kids so they can live normally and avoid being ostracized and discriminated.

First, overweight kids should avoid oversized pieces of children’s clothing. While oversized t-shirts and pants hide the extra weight, they are not flattering and they merely make the child look sloppy and untidy. Instead, go for clothes that are flattering. Take extra effort to make the clothes look tidy and clean. This is very useful for plus-size kids who wear clothes bigger than their sizes.

Every little detail counts when dressing up an overweight child. Therefore, research on styles and types of children’s clothing that will the child look thinner. A common tip is color usage-wearing clothes of the same color would make the child look taller. Meanwhile, clothes of different colors make the wearer short and clunky. Also, pants with tight waistlines are not flattering since they cause the extra flesh on the belly to bulge. Plus-size kids should also avoid children’s clothing with clingy fabrics since they emphasize the body size. However, the most common tip is the use of clothes with vertical strips to create the illusion of length.

The children’s clothing choices also determine the appearance of a child. For example, tight-fitting clothes are unflattering, but adding an unbuttoned sleeveless shirt on top of it hides what the tight clothing reveals. This can also be achieved by using additional accessories. While additional bulk on the clothes may make the child look bulky (and therefore bigger), a moderate number of accessories like jewelry, bags, and necklaces, among others, may help hide the extra weight. The most important reminder, however this that parents should help their children be comfort with whatever piece of children’s clothing they are wearing.

Tips for Decorating a Small Baby Nursery

April 3rd, 2010 by readorao

Young couples who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a baby may be challenged with decorating a nursery within a small area. The layout of many modern homes places more focus on function than on large rooms. Here are some decorating ideas that will fool the eye and magically make your baby’s room seem to be much larger than the square footage it contains.

These tips and tricks will help you to decorate with bold colors and textures in ways that won’t visually pull the walls toward the center of the room. You can make use of some handy decorating tricks and design the nursery of your dreams.

The baby bed will have the largest footprint in the nursery. Choose a streamlined design that allows the eyes to travel easily across the surface. A crib of basic design without a canopy or ornate curves and crevices will be best for our purpose. Resist the temptation to buy all of the matching pieces until you take inventory and see that there is a definite need for that chest of drawers.

Efficient storage is necessary but considers installing shelving in the nursery closet before making the decision to purchase more furniture. If utilizing the closet is not an option, shop for a chest of drawers with more height than width. Pass over short, wide baby dressers.

Choose pieces that will offer hidden storage. For instance a bench that has ample storage under the seat would be preferable. The same goes for baby beds with a large drawer hidden by the crib skirt.

Painting the walls in light colors is an old trick to make a room seem larger. If you want something more than pastel paint colors, it’s possible to decorate your nursery walls with any color that you choose without disaster. The key is to maintain a clutter-free space. Limit accessories to a minimum. This will make the room seem larger just as nicely as if you had painted the walls white.

Mirrors are excellent tools for extending the walls of any room, including the baby’s nursery. Create a magical relationship between the indoors and out while adding light and space to an otherwise cramped area. Hang a mirror opposite an open window seat to see how well it works.

Consider skipping window treatments completely. Enjoy the light and scenery. If there is a need for privacy, hang shades or blinds inside the window casings.

Choose solid color floor coverings with little or no texture. Area rugs will only break up the space and make it seem smaller. Patterns on the flooring will only draw attention to the lack of available floor space.

Decorating a baby nursery to make it seem larger is easy. Just remember, the fewer items in the room the better.

Over the Counter Cold Medications and Breastfeeding

April 1st, 2010 by readorao

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It can be extremely frustrating when you’re breastfeeding and you have a cold! Not only do you feel extremely lousy but you can’t just take any old over the counter medications to relieve your discomfort. This is because not every cold medication is safe to take while breastfeeding. In this article, we’ll discuss how to choose over the counter cold medications that are safe while breastfeeding.

First of all, you should ask yourself if a non medical approach is possible. While nursing, it is typically suggested that you try the non medical approach first as these tend to be safer for baby. Some proven natural methods that may help are:

o Take a Nap.

o Take Vitamin C or Drink Plenty of Orange Juice.

o Take a Warm Bath with Vicks Vapor Rub In It.

o Use a Humidifier.

o Rest and Relax.

Second, you should do a bit of research about the medication you wish to take. This can be done by asking your physician, a pharmacy technician, or some other medical professional. Another option is to conduct some internet research. Keep in mind however that many over the counter cold medications are excreted through breast milk so that when you take a dose, so does your baby. In addition, some cold medications have also been shown to limit or impede a mother’s ability to make milk. A good rule of thumb is that if a medication was safe during pregnancy then it is likely to be safe while nursing. However, always ask a professional to be extra careful.

Third, know the facts and be wise in your decision. Although natural remedies tend to be best, here are some common cold medications that are often recommended while you’re breastfeeding. Tylenol Cold and Sudafed are considered safe for breastfeeding mothers, along with Beconase or Flonase nasal spray. For allergies, non sedating Sudafed and Benadryl are also considered safe for use during breast feeding, although some studies show that Benadryl can actually decrease your milk supply. Allegra is fine as well, however you should avoid long term use. One thing you should also avoid is the extended capsules or formulas. These are the ones that are meant to last all day long. They are more likely to get into the breast milk and be passed to baby, as well as stay in his or her system for a longer period of time.

Instead of risking this, simply take the regular acting medications and avoid the 9 or 12 hour kind. If you find that your cold or condition is not getting better and you are continuing to take the medication in order to find relief, you should visit your physician. Continuing to take the medication will only increase the risks to your baby, and medicines should not be taken for more than a few days with no improvement in condition.

In conclusion, breastfeeding is a wonderful thing and you shouldn’t let something like a cold slow you down when it comes to giving your baby the best possible start. By utilizing the tips and ideas mentioned above, you can make the best choice for you and your nursing baby.

Here are some fun art and Craft activities for your Toddler.

Post Cards Hand Made – You need: Thick piece of paper. Paint or markers.

Have your toddler paint or draw on a thicker piece of paper. If she is not using scissors yet help her cut it out in a fun shape, the size of a postcard. When she is done turn the painted card around and write grandma, dad, a friend or somebody else a cute message. Guaranteed success for grandparents!

Sponge Art – You need: Kitchen sponge, scissor, paint and a piece of paper.

Cut a new kitchen sponge in to a shape you like. Dip it in her favorite color and have her stamp it on a paper. One idea is to cut the sponge in half and dip it in a color, stamp it on paper this is your first part of your house. Make a triangle out of the other half and stamp the roof. Cut out a small rectangular for the windows.

Pasta Necklace – You need: Noodles with holes in them, paint that will work on the pasta for example tempera paint, string.

Let your toddler paint the pasta in any colors she/he wants. Mix different kind of pasta wheels, long ones, short ones… When the pasta is dry start putting them on the string. Help her/him tie it and there you have a beautiful necklace.

Shaving Cream Art – You need: Shaving Cream.

Instead of using regular color finger paint, we use shaving cream. From own experience my son prefer that instead of regular finger painting. Spray some shaving cream on the table top and let her/him draw pictures in it. If you would like to add some color to it, add a few drops of food coloring. Let her/him make a mess it is not too hard to clean up. To avoid skin irritation rinse her hands off afterwards.
